Today is the beginning of our 5 week Central America Tour!!! Today we got on the plane and traveled to Panama first classss!

Today was our first day of traveling!

We started our day

- Caye Cauker Island (morning)

- 1^st class plane ride (afternoon)

- Panama (night)

In the morning we woke up in Caye Cauker and had breakfast with Roger, Christen, Lilly, Heather, and Emily. WE had delicious coffee, yogurt granola, and fruit!

Lilly’s scuba dive got canceled because of the weather. Therefore, everyone left except Heather, Roger and me. We stayed and enjoyed the island (Heather and I read and enjoyed our time).

After that it was sad to say goodbye to Roger, but we will see him in Florida with Tracy (the cutest PC couple).

It was a fast boat ride to the main land (Belize City). Heather and I took a taxi straight to the airport.

When we boarded the plan it was so great when we found out we got 1^st class. It was my first time in 1^st class. We were upfront with champagne, pillows, blankets, and on demand! We were really living the life and extremely grateful.

Once we reached we made a friend who was an Israeli. His name was Dickel and he lost his Swiss Army knife engraved by his grandfather. We waited a while for him, which I felt bad because we had to meet Theresa (my friend from Horsham) who was traveling Central America with us!

Once we met Theresa we all tried to get a cab and the cab drivers were trying to rip us off, but the Israeli got the right price so we joined him! We got to the really cool hostel (Luna’s Castle). The hostel was lots of fun that had fun music and a party outside. However, Heather and I were exhausted because it was a long day. So we didn’t join the party. Instead I showered, wrote in my journal, and went to bed. (We showered at 1am because the hostel said that the whole block tomorrow will be out of water from 7am to 4pm.

I can’t wait to explore Panama tomorrow!!!

I am officially an RPCV (Returned Peace Corps Volunteer). As a last hurrah and last celebration a bunch of us PCVs who just finished our service spent one night out on the magnificent Caye Cauker! … It was definitely a great way to end our service. I am here with Heather, Lilly, Emily, Christen, and Roger. We went to lunch and then rested in the afternoon. We had a delicious dinner (lobster/chicken shrimp shish kabob and fish.

We then went to have a couple drinks at a bar that is usually really crowded; however, since it is down season (low tourist season) it is dead. November starts tourist season again—but because it is not tourist season a lot of places were closed on Caye Cauker.

Lilly was going to go diving for her last time in Belize.

Tomorrow we spend the morning in Caye Cauker and then in the Belize Airport and then finally we will fly to Panama!!!!! I can’t wait!!!!

Today I got a lot accomplished. I finished up my final interviews with the country director. It all went extremely well!

I can’t believe 2 years are gone. I remember how high my spirits were when I joined Peace Corps! They are shaken a little because I don’t have a plan for what is next! I feel like I am in limbo!

The past few weeks have been amazing. The women’s group was so grateful for the all the help I provided them. The teachers (Mr. Garcia and Ms. Rose) even cried on my last day at Laguna Government School (and of course I cried too). I cried a lot on the last week in the village between delivering the cards, farewell parties, and the Sacul’s wedding.

Monday and Tuesday I spent time with my amazing host family and LCF. I had such a great time besides the night I vomited the whole night away from the popusas (a Mexican food) Heather and I had at the snack shack by the Peace Corps office.

The last week at the Peace Corps Office was crazy busy with signatures and handing papers in, saying goodbyes and medical evaluations, and final interviews! It is all over…. Wow. I am glad I did it. Peace Corps was a challenge, but an amazingly rewarding job!!!! J

I made it to Belmopan. I am preparing for my COS (Close of Service) at the Peace Corps office; I also am saying my goodbyes to my first host family who lived in Maya Mopan. I ended up staying at my LCF (Language, Cultural Facilitator) Ms. Carmalina’s house because her daughter cried that I was going to sleep over (rather than my old host family). However, tonight I will spend the night at my 1^st host family’s house. Mrs. Kus sister is down from San Pedro and we all played fun games all night thanks to her creativity! I had so many laughs… again such great memories!

Today I left my village. It was so sad. I got up early to make sure everything was taken care of. I said goodbye to Ms. Theresa, Ms. Gloria, Bernadina, and Ms. Maria. The kids didn’t wake up in time to say goodbye… and I think they did that on purpose because they all said they were tough and wouldn’t cry…. However, I know they were as sad as me! It is sad to say goodbye because I don’t know when I will be back to see them all again. Tim was taking me to the junction to catch the bus. He took me to the Shol family to say good bye too. I cried when saying goodbye to them too. The Shols and Ms. Theresa’s family were really good to me. Those two families are very kind and good hearted!

I stopped crying once I got on the James bus. I rode to the Peace Corps office and dropped off my suitcases. After that I went to stay with my old 1^st favorite host family! I couldn’t believe how big the kids have gotten!!!

I can’t believe today is here. It is my last full day in my village! I lasted 2 years in my village! What an experience I had!

So today is Ricardo’s and Miriams wedding! I am excited I get to celebrate with them! It was the first wedding I went to at the Pentecostal Church. It was really nice. There were bridesmaids and groomsmen all dressed up. Their two baby girls were baptized. (I often see that in the village—they get married, baptize their kids all in the same day.) It is common in the village to have kids before you are married. Common law is very common in the village ;)

Their wedding was one of the best weddings I have been to…. Very fun! They had lots of food options (caldo, bbq, or rice and beans). They had loud music and people danced! Also there was delicious cake and dessert handed out to everyone! I really enjoyed myself. However, I got really burnt trying to get around to talk to everyone. Can’t believe my Peace Corps Experience is almost Complete!!!

This morning Amy came to visit me! My kid neighbors taught her how to properly machete! She is so funny that way. I am so happy she came to visit me before I left my village. After Amy left I baked at the Sacul’s house and helped them get ready for the wedding. I was so happy that I was able to go to one more wedding before I left the village. Ricardo and Miriam are getting married tomorrow!

After I helped bake. Ms. Adelita and all her kids had me over for tamales, which were really great! I will miss that family. The mom truly believes in God…. And I am very happy for her because she has had a really struggling/trying life. I give her so much credit for all that she has been through.

Today is my big farewell party at Laguna Government School. It was a hard day for me. When the time came I wanted to say my speech, but I couldn’t speak… my eyes teared up. I made a slideshow of the pictures from the past years of everyone in the school. The teachers all presented me with cards from the students. It was so nice. They sang me songs/chants. I finally was able to say my speech. They made me a cake and we had cohune cabbage. It was a very special day that I will never forget. All the kids gave me hugs and said how much they will miss me. I will miss every one of them!

I went over to my host families for dinner because they apologized and invited me over. Let’s just say it didn’t end nicely they again were stealing from me. I will not be in contact with that family. I have learned my lesson… they showed me who they are and I should believe them.

Today I spent the day getting ready to leave. I sent my final DOS (Description of Service) and wrote a speech to say at the last day at school and cards for everyone. After school there was a PTA meeting about the safety and security of the school. Then after dinner I went to Ms. Maria’s house for a delicious meal (she is definitely one of the BEST cooks in the village!)

After a competitive application process stressing technical skills, motivation, adaptability, and cross-cultural understanding, Peace Corps invited Grace Boswell to serve as an Education Teacher Trainer in the Central American nation of Belize.

Pre-Service Training

Grace Boswell began an intensive 9-week pre-service training in Maya Mopan a community located 10 minutes from the capital, Belmopan. The program consisted of language training, technical skills training, and cross-cultural studies training. Throughout the pre-service training program, Grace Boswell lived with a Belizean family, reinforcing her linguistic abilities and exposing herself to Belizean culture and traditions.

PC Belize’s Training program included:

77.5 hours of formal instruction in Q’eqchi
96 hours of core topics (history, politics, economics, cross-cultural, safety & security, and health)
123 hours of technical project training

Primary Assignment

On October, 22, 2009, Grace Boswell completed training and was sworn in as a Peace Corps Volunteer. She was assigned to Laguna Village, Toledo District, Belize Central America.

As a Primary Education Teacher Trainer, Grace Boswell provided formal and informal training and support to 9 different primary school teachers at Laguna Government School. She also provided classroom instructions and model teaching at the primary school almost weekly during the school year. Transferring her expertise in the classroom to the teachers in areas of lesson planning, instructional strategies, and classroom management this would ensure sustainability.

Ms. Boswell established and ran a preschool in Laguna Village opening the doors on September 1, 2010 to fifteen 3 and 4 year-olds. She trained and mentored two teachers in early childhood, learner-centered and age-appropriate teaching methods so that the two new teachers would be able to run the preschool in the future. Ms. Boswell also instructed and motivated the teachers to promote the importance of play, use of manipulatives, differentiate instruction, literacy rich classrooms, student assessments, cooperative learning, and parent-teaching support and conferences. In addition she conducted 2 successful workshops for 15 parents promoting awareness of the importance of early childhood education. This all correlated with Peace Corps framework for early childhood education teacher training. Ms. Boswell handed over the preschool to the Ministry of Education.

Also meeting Peace Corps framework, Grace Boswell conducted 10 workshops and provided ongoing support to 10 local primary school teachers. Some of the 60 minute workshops focused specifically on literacy teaching methodologies (reading, writing, and instructional strategies), classroom management, learning styles, hands-on lesson planning, health, the environment, childhood development, and English as a second language (ESL). Grace Boswell was able to see these skills that she taught to the teachers applied in their classrooms. Grace Boswell also partnered with the teachers to help create a Laguna Government School well-planned yearly schedule of events and a handbook for the primary school. Ms. Boswell had the ability to help compose a well-written school mission and vision statement, which was shared, used and displayed by all the teachers and students of Laguna Government School.

In addition to the primary assignment, Grace Boswell instructed intervention reading groups for 30 primary school students in grades K-8. She provided individual support for struggling readers, specifically those with learning disabilities and special needs. She had a 90% success rate raising 28 students reading level, either on or above grade level. She taught and supported 6 multi-grade classroom teachers to effectively use reading diagnostic assessments and form reading groups in their classrooms.

Grace Boswell lobbied, applied, and successfully was able to receive free internet from Belize Telemedia Company for Laguna Government School. After successfully receiving internet service she taught computer classes to primary school, high school, university students and adults; teaching a total of 40 individuals the basics of computer and internet skills. Therefore, she was able to transfer her knowledge, skills and ability to use computers to the Belizeans in her village that had interest in learning and using computers.

All Ms. Boswell’s primary projects were focused on sustainability, ensuring that they continue when she leaves Belize.

Secondary Activities

Grace Boswell’s secondary projects included focusing on WID/GAD initiatives. She applied and was awarded a Peace Corps Partnership Grant for $1,950.00 US dollars after writing a detailed proposal for Laguna Women’s Group. This grant was used to receive training for 19 women in quality bag and craft making, learning new designs and marketing to encourage independence and economic self-reliance for all the women in her village. Ms. Boswell also worked with the women’s group to create brochures, a website, and a logo to market their small business. She also created a partnership with Mount St. Mary’s University, MD and the Laguna women’s group. This was all accomplished in order to attain local financial sustainability for the women of Laguna.

After Ms. Boswell received the grant she shared her knowledge of grant writing to 4 village council members so that the village could have the ability to write a successful grant in the future.

Grace Boswell also conducted Literacy for Action Project for Laguna Village Women’s Group to help 10 ladies learn some of the basics of reading and writing in a 2 week session. Given that Ms. Boswell had the ability to help children read and write she then pursued to teach the adults literacy skills they could use for the rest of their lives.

Grace Boswell also ran a successful GLOW (Girls Leading Our World) Club focusing on a total of 21 girls’ self-esteem, self-reliance, and self-expression. The girls and Ms. Boswell would meet almost 4 times a week for 2 hour meetings. Once a year she contributed in organizing a 5 day summer camp in 2010 and 2011 for Belizean girls all over Belize. She brought a total of 9 girls to camp. Grace Boswell transferred her knowledge of extracurricular activities to two young women in the village. Therefore, the group has been taken over by two Belizean women so that it continues when Ms. Boswell leaves Laguna Village.

Ms. Boswell also had informal health and fitness classes for children ages 6 to 14. These classes were focused on the well-being of the children in Laguna and to encourage good health practices at a young age.

Grace Boswell spent over 10 hours a week on her secondary projects, also ensuring that they were well run sustainable projects.

Language Skills

Grace Boswell was trained in Q’eqchi, the local language of Laguna Village, and obtained language acquisition from her local villagers. Grace Boswell was able to use this language to successfully integrate into her village aiding her to be more effective in both her primary and secondary projects. Understanding and being able to speak some Q’eqchi allowed her to integrate and complete projects easier especially with the Laguna Women’s Group project.

Summary

Grace Boswell completed her Peace Corps service in Belize on October 14, 2011.

Pursuant to section 5(f) of the Peace Corps Act 22 U.S.C 2504 (f) as amended, any former Volunteer employed by the United States Government following their Peace Corps Volunteer service is entitled to have any period of satisfactory Peace Corps Volunteer service credited for purposes of retirement, seniority, reduction in force, leave and other privileges based on length of federal government service. Peace Corps service shall not be credited toward completion of the probationary or trial period or completion of any service requirement for career appointment.

This is to certify in accordance with Executive Order No. 11103 of 10 April 1963, that Grace Boswell served satisfactorily as a Peace Corps Volunteer. Her service in Belize ended on October 14, 2011. She is therefore eligible to be appointed as a career-conditional employee in the competitive civil service on a non-competitive basis.

This benefit under the Executive Order entitlement extends for a period of one year after termination of the Volunteer’s service, except that the employing agency may extend that period for up to three years for a former Volunteer who enters military service, pursues studies at a recognized institution of higher learning, or engages in other activities that, in the view of the appointing authority, warrant extension of the period.

Today I went to school all day and then afterwards went to church. They acknowledged me a church that I would be leaving soon, thanked me, and prayed for me. It was really nice. Every day I am getting more and more sad to leave these people that have become friends and family to me.

Today we had 3 PCVs in Laguna Village: Shannon (teaching marketing), Nate (setting up all the computers that were donated) and I. Today my women’s group threw me a farewell party. It was so nice (chicken caldo, corn tortilla, and pooch). Nate, Shannon and all my teachers and principal came to the farewell lunch with me! After the lunch and when the teachers left the women presented me with a beautiful wooden bowl and jipajoper basket, as well as my 2 cuxtals (one for my computer bag and one as my teaching bag). I definitely got teary eyed I am so sad to leave my women’s group and Laguna.

Today I woke up early to continue my house to house visits with all the villagers. However, during midafternoon I had a call from the principal that he was on his way to look at the barrels and sort through them (and see all the new computers that were sent).

The teachers and villagers were excited to open the barrels.

When I started looking at the items I noticed a Kekchi song book and I wondered why that would have been shipped from the states. Then I realized that Paula shipped back all my stuff that I had given her to bring home when she visited me in Dec 2010. It was all my teaching clothes and books. She sent it all back and a lot of my teaching clothes got sold to the villagers already. I was able to salvage one dress skirt and one dress pants and all the books. These barrels were still causing me heartache because I would have to find space in my suitcase to bring home about 15 books that were already home!

Anyway, I was happy the villagers were so excited to receive all the items and computers! I was most excited that Laguna Gov’t School was going to have 10 working computers!!!

Today we had no school because it was BNTU meetings in town. I went to PG to get my last of my groceries. I wouldn’t be buying anymore because I will be leaving the village soon for good L So I rode my bike to the junction and then went into town. I did all my shopping; however, I put my box of food on a different bus. I was panicking that the bus had already left. I didn’t know what to do because I only had my name on the box (not the name of my village). I was planning to take the other bus with Ms. Maria and her family I tried calling their phone to see if they could get my box for me. Their phone was dead. But, luckily their brother-in-law was on the bus with them. He called me that they would get the box when they got off the bus. Therefore, all my groceries made it to Laguna… thanks to the Iche family!

After getting back from PG and putting all my groceries away I went visiting villagers to say my goodbyes.

While visiting I got a call from my principal that the barrels we have been waiting for are on their way and they should be in the village sometime this night. The barrels ended up not coming until midnight (3 kids from across the street stayed up and waited with me.) I finally got the call and we all went in the pouring rain to open the school and put the barrels in the classroom.

I was so excited the barrels actually made it. This donation project has given me such heartache. So happy everything made it safe and sound to Laguna Village!

Today was just a normal day at school where I observed one of my teachers and gave her constructive feedback. Her classroom is really awesome. I can tell she has been studying hard; she is pursuing her bachelor’s degree at UB (University of Belize) in primary education.

Today we finally were able to crown our Queen and King of Laguna. Since there were so many days off of school we were not able to crown the queen and king before the 21^st! The teachers also handed out treats for each student in celebration of September 21^st (Belize’s 30^th Independence Day)!

The Government of Belize officially declared Monday, September26, 2011 as a National Holiday due to the State Funeral of National Hero and Father of Belize’s Independence, The Honorable George Cadle Price. Bernadina and I streamed the state funeral on the internet; however, some people from Laguna attended the funeral.

State Funeral For Belize’s First Prime Minister Monday

With profound regret, the Government of Belize has announced the death of the Rt. Hon. George Price 92, National Hero and Father of The Nation. Mr. Price, the founder of Belize democracy who guided Belize to independence on 21 September 1981, died around 6:30 a.m. today, Monday, September 19, 2011. A diplomatic note has gone out to the world of Mr. Price’s passing.

Mr. Price passed away at Belize Health Care Partners, a private hospital in Belize City. He had been in a medically induced coma following surgery to repair a blood clot following an injury to his head sustained in a fall at his home on Pickstock Street last Wednesday.

The Government of Belize in conjunction with Mr. Price’s family is making arrangements for a state funeral to take place on Monday, September 26. As well, Books of Condolence in which tributes can be inscribed will be opened today in Belmopan and Belize City.

An official period of mourning has now begun, and flags are being flown at half-mast right through to September 26th, with the exception of Independence Day. Additional details concerning the funeral ceremony and the internment of the Father Of The Nation, will be released as soon as they are finalized.

In a press release issued today, Belize Prime Minister Dean Barrow stated: “On behalf of a grateful nation to which Mr. Price devoted his entire life, I offer condolences to his immediate and extended family and to the People’s United Party. This was a giant of a man, the greatest architect of Belizean Nationalism and Belizean Sovereignty. May he rest in peace.”

Today I went to Laguna’s public meeting today in the community center. Halfway through the meeting the chairman announced that I will be leaving soon (2 weeks exactly!). Therefore, I gave a little speech saying how much I will miss Laguna! I also discussed recent projects I am finishing up….At the school I gave my last few workshops, I helped finish the handbook, and update the mission and vision statement. I was sad to announce that the government will not be taking over the preschool. Therefore, all the preschool resources will be stamped Laguna Government School and handed over to the Primary School in the next week. My GLOW group is handed over to Ms. Bernadina and Ms. Maria to run it once I leave the village (I am so happy it is continuing—sustainability!!!) The women’s group project is finishing up and we accomplished all our goals. Also, there are 6 barrels on the way from the states. The barrels contain 9 computers and educational resources.

Lastly I invited the villagers to visit me at my house and that I would be around to say my final goodbyes!

Today I woke up early to help clean out Laguna Governments School small computer lab. The lab has been closed up for a while because all the computers at Laguna Gov’t School seem to be broken/spoiled.

I am happy that Theresa business was able to donate 9 computers. Therefore, we need to fix up the lab and accommodate for the 9 computers that will soon arrive!

Today I celebrated independence in the village and tried to catch up on all my projects (Women’s Grant final report, VRF. DOS, and BLOG.)

Executive Summary: What were the project's goals and objectives? (Were the goals met?) Describe any changes in the initial project objectives. Did the community feel they reached the goals of the project? How do you know?

The Laguna Women’s Group Co-op project consisted of three major goal components. The first goal was to receive training on how to make quality cuxtal bags. Some women already knew how to make cuxtal, but they wanted to make them with better quality. Then there were young women who did not know how to make cuxtals, and since they attended the sessions they were able to learn how to make cuxtals. This goal was met because over 20 women went to the training and many youth were able to learn how to make cuxtals and to make them well. We had 8, eight hour, sessions, which was exactly what the women needed to learn the basics of quality cuxtal making.

The second goal was to be trained in many new designs, which a lady from Guatemala came over to teach the Laguna women’s group. This goal was met because all the women attended the training and increased their new cuxtal design skills. They continue to practice and make cuxtals with new designs even after the training has finished. The goal was met because all 20 women received 15, eight hour, sessions.

The third step was for our women’s group to receive training in marketing, which was accomplished. However, the women received less marketing training than anticipated in the proposal because they wanted to spend more time on getting training on improving their cuxtal crafts. We originally thought that the women needed about 3 weeks marketing training, but it ended up that all that was needed was 2, eight hour, sessions of marketing training. With that training the women’s group felt they met the goal because they now have new ideas where and how to market their cuxtal bags.

The Laguna Women’s Group feels they reached the goal of the project because they received and participated in all the training that was given to them to increase their income. They now have an advantage over the other Belizean women’s group because Laguna’s women’s group now knows how to make quality cuxtal bags with lots of new designs, which are not commonly seen in Belize.

Also another major goal was to increase the group’s selling and by creating a place for the women to sell and with the grant money we were able to build a thatch house, which will be a place to increase sales. Having this building built was a big step for the Laguna Women’s Group in having a successful business. They now have their own place that tourist in the village can come and visit and buy more of the women’s crafts because their cuxtal and crafts will be on display.

Over the course of the year, with the help of the grant I have seen the women take charge of their business. Through this project they have become more independent, and are able to better see to the health and well-being of themselves and their families because they will have a greater income.

This was all accomplished in order to attain local financial sustainability for the women of Laguna.

Indicators of Success: How did the project build capacity? What new skills have been acquired by community members and/or their organizations? (Also update the indicators of success you outlined in the PCPP project proposal and be specific.)

The project was able to build a capacity by giving the women new skills they needed in order to have a successful business. The women were able to learn many new skills and knowledge that were acquired by the women of Laguna

One way that this project was able to build capacity was that the team spirit of the women’s group has increased. At first the women were nervous working with other women. However, by the end of this project the women of Laguna have learned to work with each other strengthening the Laguna Women’s Group!

A second way that this project built capacity was that the project increased the women’s level of appreciation and understanding of the cuxtal craft they are making. They now appreciate good quality of the cuxtal and they now better understand the strategies and techniques used.

The first new skill that was acquired by the women was that they learned how to make better quality cuxtals. In the proposal we had that the women of Laguna would learn to make better quality jewelry and baskets; however, we just ended up strictly working with cuxtals not jewelry or baskets.

The second skill acquired was that Laguna women’s group also got training in new designs and it was learned by over 20 women and youths, which have increased the number of cuxtals made. The women now have a bigger selection of well made and new designed cuxtals. This will also increase revenue in the future, which as the proposal suggested this project helped the health and well-being of the women in so many ways!

Third, the women of Laguna have learned new marketing strategies and skills that they did not know before. The women have been able to sell more with the help of the marketing trainings.

Sustainability: How will community members apply their new skills or otherwise sustain the benefits of the project? How will they cover any recurring costs?

The community members will apply their new skills to continue producing and making new cuxtals. They will display them in the new thatch house built for the groups business to be successful. They will be able to cover any recurring costs because they already got the training they need and if in the future they need any more training for specific skills they would sell more bags in order to get the money needed for more training.

The building will be used as a craft center and the certain percentage of the sales (10%$) will go back to the sustainability of the group/project.

Since the capacity builders have increased it is strongly believed and they have the capability of fundraising and sustaining this project.

Additional Information: What unexpected events (positive or negative) did you encounter during the project? Based on your experiences, do you have any recommendations for other communities implementing a similar project?
I would like to start with the unexpected positive events that we encountered was that the support and participation from the women was amazing. I was surprised how many women and youth were interested and learned how to make cuxtals. Their enthusiasm was inspiring. We didn’t realize that there were so many women in the village who do not know how to make cuxtal; however, the women ended up being extremely interested and learning how to make cuxals increasing the members of Laguna Women’s Group. Participation went above and beyond what was anticipated in the proposal. The women stay during lunch break or after hours working and perfecting their cuxtal craft.

The only negative even was that we had to change the budget around because the cost of the thatch building was more than planned in the proposal. Therefore, we just had fewer marketing sessions, which ended up being better in the end. Overall this project was a huge success and we are pleased to see that it will be sustainable.

Based on my experience I recommend implementing a similar project because this project helped many women in my community, but not only the women but their families. Now because of the trainings the women have gotten more confident and are more financially independent and not so reliant on just the male figure. They can help send their children to school or to the doctors without acquiring more debt. The women will have a new freedom and this project was able help the women earn more respect and become more self-reliant!

Today I was at school all day. During school Christian Heritage (the ministry down the road) came to Laguna Government School to drop off donations. Laguna is blessed with all the donations it gets; I just hope they truly appreciate it and don’t just expect it.

After school I met with Ms. Betsy to hand over the scholarship money for the Cowo girls. After that meeting I met with the women’s group leaders (Ms. Rosa, Ms. Leonora and Ms. Gloria). We discussed the final stages of the grant. I am happy to soon be finished with the successful project. The women have been amazing.

Today I went to the women’s group meeting. We talked about how successful the PCPP project has been. We also talked about the trainings we have left and the thatch that needs to be built with the PCPP grant money. The women seem excited to have a craft center in the village! Also, what they discussed was my farewell party…… too kind! The women’s group is planning me a good bye party on Tuesday Oct 4! I hope I don’t cry when saying good bye to my amazing women’s group!

Today we went to Pg to celebrate the 30^th Independence Day for Belize. Belize’s Independence Day is actually September 21! However, usually the Friday before Independence Day the Ministry of Education plans for children’s and youth rally.

This year we were told to catch the bus at 7:30. I got to the school around 7am to get the banners, flags, and items for sale all ready. However, Ms. Rose (the only other teacher who came to school that day), I and the students had to wait for the bus forever. The bus never arrived until 10am. The past few years the Shol’s would charter us and were always on time. Now that the Shols don’t run their bus anymore they weren’t our charter.

Once we reached we were not too late. The ceremony was supposed to begin at 9am, but didn’t start until around 10am. It is common to be late in Belize (that took some time to get used to… because I am usually a punctual person).

Once we arrived there were some presentations from Toledo District schools. Laguna Government School Std 3 and 4 went on stage to present a poem called “Treasure Me” written by Ms. Rose the Std. 3 and 4 teacher.

After the ceremony was finished all the schools began parading around PG town. Laguna is always the loudest and most enthusiastic group. We chanted Hip, Hip—Hooray . Laguna – Today. Independence—we are free!

After the parade we went to an exhibition about the History of Belize. It was very interesting; however, the children were all tired and exhausted… I hope they got something out of it.

Some of the information we learned was that Belize remained a British colony until 1981; rather late for the West Indies. Spain and France lost most Caribbean possessions in the early 19^th century, while Her Majesty’s island colonies were liberated in the 1960s. With its deep ethnic diversions, a unifying national identity formed slowly, and the Belizean independence movement displayed more patience than resistance.

September 1981 Belize was declared an independent nation-state within the British Commonwealth. Even Guatemala recognized Belize as a sovereign nation in 1991.

Once we were finished we headed back to Laguna; where I spent the rest of the day reading an excellent book.

Today the lady of Guatemala began her training sessions today (I am very happy because my grant is finally ending well). My ladies group told me not to attend because the Guatemala lady might see a white person and expect to be paid more. Therefore, I am having the ladies report back to me after training and Ms. Maria is in charge of taking pictures of the ladies weaving the beautiful cuxtals. I was told that this new design takes a lot of time and is much more difficult than what the Laguna ladies are used to. I am very proud of my ladies… their motivation and desire to learn is very high and great!!!

Today I and the other second year Peace Corps volunteers went to Tobacco Caye to celebrate our 2 year anniversary of Peace Corps… and our COSing! I like the way lonely planet describes Tobacco Caye… “Tiny Tobacco Caye, 200 yd long, 100 yd wide and mainly sandy, sits right on the barrier reef 12 miles from Dangriga. With half a dozen places to stay, it’s popular with travelers on a limited budget looking for the Gilligan’s Island experience. The atmosphere is sociable and friendly. At most accommodation all guests eat at the same time, and three places have bars open to all.”

First Day of Medical Tuesday September 6, 2011

Today was my first day of medical evaluations for my Peace Corps Close of Service. I was excited I didn’t pass out when they took my blood and I got exempted from my stool samples because I told Nurse Jackie that I wouldn’t be able to go.

I enjoyed hanging out with Megan, Lilly, and Emily! However, the Garden City (the hotel PC puts up) makes me sick because of all the mold it has in all the rooms.

Today my first appointment for the day was the dentist. I have always loved going to the dentist because I love the feeling after when my teeth are all clean!

My second appointment was a full physical with Dr. Craig. It was very easy and quick. However, I made sure he covered everything… checking my nose and ears etc.

My last appointment for the day was to go to eye doctors just to pick out a new pair of glasses. Lilly came with me because I wanted help choosing a new stylish pair of glasses. It took forever to find a pair I liked; Lilly was very kind and patient and I appreciated it greatly. I was very pleased with the pair I picked and the office will ship them to PG in the next few days.

I survived medical… thank goodness because I was dreading it!

Today was the first day of school. It was a great day. Every student was in their uniform (this was the first time I have seen that in my 2 years being at Laguna Government School). We also have two new enthusiastic teachers this year!

After school I left to stay at Heather’s (PCV in Belmopan) to discuss our itinerary for traveling all Central America countries. She planned so well… I am grateful and getting so excited.

Today I helped Bernadina set up her Std. 3 classroom at San Marcus. She is beginning her internship to finish her associate’s degree. I am excited for her because I remember my internship a couple years ago. She is quite nervous. There was lots of work that needed to be done. The teachers before them like to leave their classroom dirty.

After I began to help Bernadina I then went to PG that night to go Erica’s going away party. She had such a great party at her host mother’s house. It was a big Garifuna celebration with drumming and BBQ! It was very touching and sentimental! We all said our good bye toast… I will miss you Erica… but, since we live the closest in the states I think we will continue to be close good friends!

Today the GLOW girls finally went on our planned trip to Lubaantun and Columbia River. They raised enough funds to take a charter and have lunch.

We went to Lubaantun ruins. The Maya ruins at Lubaantun 1.3 miles north of San Pedro Columbia, are built on a natural hilltop and display a construction method usual in the ancient Maya world (though typical of southern Belize) of neatly cut small limestone blocks. Belize’s then chief-medical officer, Thomas Gann, amateur archaeologies, bestowed the name of Lubaantun (Place of the Fallen Stones) in 1924. History does not record whether Gann’s naming of the site was inspired by his own practice of dynamiting temple tops to remove earth and rocks. More professional work has taken place since 1970 and much of the site is now cleared and restored.
Archaeologist postulate that Lubaantun, which flourished between AD 730 and 860., may have been an administrative center regulating trade, while nearby Nim Li Punit (the other ruin nearby-which I have also been to) was the local religious and ceremonial center. The Maya site comprises a collection of five plazas, three ball courts, and surrounding structures. Lubaantun is known for the numerous mold-made ceramic figurines found here, many of which represent ancient ball players.
We were lucky and the man in the office gave us great insight of Lubanntun and the missing crystal skull.

The girls enjoyed themselves!

After we went to the ruin we went to Columbia to have a picnic. San Pedro Columbia is around 20 miles northwest of Punta Gorda. It is the largest K’ekchi Maya community outside of Guatemala. Columbia (as locals call it) was established by K’ekchi families who left Pueblo Viejo to look for new farmland around 1905. The village has seen boom and bust cycles with mahogany and cedar feeling, chicle collection and, in the 1970s and 1980s, marijuana cultivation. There are currently around 1500 people in Columbia.
After the delicious picnic that Ms. Maria cooked (fried chicken, mash potato, rice and beans and juice) we all swam in the river, but for Beth because she didn’t want to get wet before her long bus ride to Belmopan. The current was very strong, but I had brave GLOW girls that jumped in the deep water and me and Bernadina would catch them to bring them to the land so that they didn’t just keep floating down the river. My GLOW girls aren’t the best swimmers because we don’t have big rivers in Laguna. We just have little shallow creeks that they are used to swimming, bathing, and washing in.

When leaving we dropped Beth off at the junction because she had to go to Belmopan and catch her plane the next day. We were all sad to say good bye. I had so much fun while Beth was here!

I took Beth to Hopkins because I have never been there before and I wanted to experience something new with her. On the way to Hopkins Beth and I stood on a crowded bus for awhile (she had to stand longer than me).

Hopkins is located off the main southern highway. The coastal Garifuna village of Hopkins is a fairly popular spot for travelers looking to soak up some sun and culture. Smaller than Dangiriga, Hopkins is a good place to meet other travelers to base yourself exploration in surroundings areas. The beaches in Hopkins are decent, though, outside the ones kept clean by the owners of the properties behind them, they aren’t always free of trash (littering is always a problem in Belize). Dolphins and manatees are spotted regularly from the beach.

Founded in 1942 by people from Newtown, a nearby Garifuna settlement that was destroyed by a hurricane, the village is named for Frederick Charles Hopkins, a Catholic priest who drowned in the waters here in 1923.

Kim the Peace Corps in Hopkins enjoys living in Hopkins. She said her village fits her loud personality! Kim was a fabulous host. She took Beth and I to the shop and then to dinner to get the local Garifuna food Hudut (which Beth had- it is the mashed plantain one with fish) and I had the mashed banana one with fish!

The wedding began at the House of Prayer around 8am. The wedding party didn’t arrive until 9am. I have been to 5 weddings in Belize, but this was the first wedding that I saw a lot of American customs. They had bridesmaids and groomsmen and flower girls and ring borrow, as well as throwing the bouquet and garter.

Mr. Shol said the wedding message and he said it in English because the wife was from Orange Walk and does not speak K’kechi only English and Spanish. I was glad it was in English because Beth was able to understand.

After the wedding we went to the party at the Cucul’s residence. We had rice and beans and chicken (I let Beth try the pooch though because that is usually custom at big K’ekchi parties.) She said she liked it all!

Today we woke up late because we have been on the go for the past several days. After getting up I did insanity while Beth showered. Then I showered and we got ready to help prepare for tomorrows wedding. However, once we were headed to the Cucul’s house to help bake Ms. Theresa was coming back and said that everyone is on lunch break so that we should not go back until around 2:30pm. Therefore, I took Beth to Ms. Maria’s house. Beth taught Ms. Maria, Ms. Theresa, Jaline, Stephanie, Mark, and Sebastian how to make guacamole and then Ms. Maria taught Beth how to make flour tortillas. We enjoyed the tradeoff!

After cooking we all ate and then Beth and I headed off to help for the wedding. We helped make decorations made out of crip paper and then we went in the kitchen to help make corn tortillas. Therefore, Beth helped make flour and corn tortillas today and she had her first bowl of caldo.

Then we went back to my house and relax (the House of Prayer was having a church service tonight, but Beth and I decided not to go because she wasn’t feeling her utmost best.) Therefore, we went to bed early and got up early to go to the wedding.

Machaca Hill Resort

Today Beth and I got up early and went to Punta Gorda. I quickly showed her around PG and the market (we bought our groceries for the week). After quickly touring PG we met my principal and his twins to go on a trip to Machaca Hill Resort. I heard the resort was gorgeous and I wanted to go there for a while (the GLOW girls were going to go there for their end of the year trip, but then they all changed their minds.) Therefore, I decided to go and bond with my principal and to show Beth a beautiful resort in Belize … since she just ended up sleeping at Peace Corps Volunteers houses all week (Shannon, Mine and Kim’s house).

Before going to Machaca hill we stopped at Mr. Garcia grandmother’s house to get star fruits. I love star fruits and she had a huge tree with many many star fruits on it.

After chatting with Mr. Garcia’s family and picking fruit we went to Machaca Hill Resort. The lonely planet book says that Machaca Hill Lodge is a marvelous rainforest and fishing lodge with a superb hilltop setting overlooking miles of protected jungle stretching down to the Gulf of Honduras. Surrounded by the Laughing Falcon Reserve, an 11,000-acre privately owned protected area, the lodge offers comfortable accommodations and access to unparalleled fishing. Experienced fishing guides take anglers out on eight-hour fishing trips and the lodge has a well-stocked fly shop, and fly-fishing gear for rent. On land, there’s excellent birding, trails to walk and trips to southern Belize at tractions. The 12 beautiful room boast solid wood furniture, ceramic-lined bathrooms, two queen sized beds and verandahs overlooking the jungle and sea. The lodge is 2.4 miles off the Southern Highway, from a turnoff 3 miles out of PG.

It was beautiful the twins, Beth and Mr. Garcia saw the jungle lodge. We took lots of pictures of the flowers and trees. Then we walked down 300 steps to get down to the river. The river was very brown (not too pretty to swim in). The Machaca Hill worker said that there has been a lot of sightings of crocodiles and many fish. Then we took the electric pully tram back up instead of walking back up the steps. We then planned to swim in their beautiful pool for a price of 10 BZD. However, the manager said they changed their policy. They are no longer allowing outsiders to swim in the pool… only people who stay at the hotel can swim in the pool. We were all kinda bummed because we wanted to swim.

Since we couldn’t swim then we went back to Mr. Garcia’s house and Mrs. Garcia was just getting home from her teacher’s workshop and their son Chris was just getting out of high school early. We then decided to go to the park and get cahoone cabbage to eat. (Mr. Garcia picked it up for us and brought it back to his house for us). After finishing the delicious cahoone cabbage we then headed to the PG sea. Beth and I decided not to swim because we soon had to get on the bus and head back to Laguna. The twins (Elton and Emma) had a blast swimming in the PG sea!!!

We went back to Laguna and Beth taught me how to cook an easy tuna casserole meal!

Triple adventure!

Today Beth and I woke up early to do a triple tour! Our tour included a trip to Altun Ha ruins, Caves branch ziplining and cave tubing. Today was such an AMAZING day!

Altun Ha is the ruin that inspired the Belikin beer label. Altun Ha ruins stands 34 miles north of central Belize City, off the Old Northern Highway.

Altun Ha was a rich and important Maya training and agricultural town with a population of 8,000 to 10,000 at its peak in the Classic Period (AD 300-1000). The entire site covered some 1500 acres, but what visitors today see is the central ceremonial precinct of two plazas surrounded by temples, excavated in the 1960s and now looking squeaky clean following a stabilization and conservation program from 2000 to 2004.

Altun Ha existed by at least 200 BC, perhaps even several centuries earlier, and flourished until the mysterious collapse of Classic Maya civilization around AD 900. Most of the temples date from around AD 550 to 650, thought, like many Maya temples; most of them are composed of several layers, having been built over periodically in a series of renewals. Altun Ha was a smaller ruin site than I expected, but I still enjoyed it!

After the ruin we went to Caves Branch for ziplining. The ziplining was so amazing. It was as if we were flying through the jungles of Belize! The Zip-line Canopy Tour, where you zoom through the treetops from platform to platform on six linked cable runs up to 200ft long. Trained guides give you safety briefing and helped us into our harnesses. It was so awesome!

Then Beth and I went cave tubing. Cave tubing is one of the biggest rages in Belize. Belize is a blessed country with a many fairly gentle and temperate in watercourses working their way through gorgeous scenery. The best adventure is floating in and out of a sequence of caves with a headlamp (the only light available). We sat in an inflated inner-tube and floating and paddling along a river. We went downstream most of the time and the only technique that needs to be learnt is how to avoid getting beached, eddied or snagged on rocks whole continuing to face the right direction (which Andrew my bf had trouble with in Jan :). It is super cool to view all the stalactites, stalagmites, crystalline formations and artifacts from ancient Maya rituals.

This was my third time cave tubing and again I learned that to the ancient Maya, caves were entrances to Xibalba, the underworld and residence of important gods. Many Belizean caves today still contain relics of Maya ceremonies, offerings or sacrifices. This archaeological element makes cave exploration doubly exciting!

An exhausting but amazing day!!

After the fabulous tour we were headed to Laguna Village; however, it took longer than expected because Beth got the full Belizean experience of the James bus breaking down for over an hour. The James bus goes from Belize City to Belmopan to Dangriga to Independence and to PG and vice versa.
James Bus Line is one of the largest bus companies serving the south. James runs nine times a day from Punta Gorda to Belize City (22 BZD seven hours), pulling into Independence (9BZD, two hours), Dangriga (14BZD 3.5 hours) and Belmopan (20BZD 5.5 hours).

Most Belizean buses are old US school buses. Regular-service buses stop anywhere to drop and pick up passengers. Express buses, sometimes air-conditioned, have limited stops and as result are quicker and usually less crowed. They cost a bit more but it’s worth the extra few dollars, especially on longer trips.

Side note we used to have a market bus (but we still do not have one in Laguna!) it was run by the Shols. It is common for a variety of smaller bus companies to serve villagers around the country. They often run to local work and school schedules, with buses going into a larger town (Punta Gorda Town for me!) in the morning and returning in the afternoon.

Anyway Beth got educated with the bus schedules..... We finally reached home late at night (getting a 10BZD charter from the Laguna junction. )

Today I woke up at 3 am and rode my bike to the junction. It was so scary because it was pitch black and I couldn’t see anything, but what my flash light shown. I rode right past the house I was going to park my bike. Therefore, I locked my bike on a small baby coconut tree at Christian Heritage. Then I walked with my bags to the bus stop because it was so dark it felt like it took an eternity to get there. There was no moon or stars shining because it was cloudy. I decided once I got to the bus stop that I would move to the forestry because they had a street light and Laguna didn’t have any street lights. However, once I got to the Forestry department it began pouring on me. Therefore, I had to run back to Laguna’s bus stop and wait in the dark. I reached Laguna junction at 4am and the bus did not arrive until 4:50am. I was tired and waiting took forever!

Once on the bus I just wanted to sleep. I have gotten to be a pro at sleeping on the bus… Unless I get the aisle seat and then I often fall over onto the person I am sitting next to.

Once I reached Belize, Mr. Gomez (the Peace Corps favorite taxi driver) gave me a GREAT deal to pick up Beth from the airport. It was wonderful seeing her. It has almost been about three years since I have seen her.

Once we got back to the city we looked for lunch, as well as fruits and vegetables at the market. We had the traditional rice and beans with stew chicken; however, this time there was cold mash potatoes included today.

Beth and I headed to the Baboon Sanctuary, where Shannon another PCV volunteers. There are no real baboons that inhabit Belize, however Belizeans often use that name for the black howler monkeys. The Community Baboon Sanctuary is spread over several long established Creole villages in the Belize River Valley. The sanctuary has engineered a big increase in the primate’s population and is doubly interesting because it is completely community-run, grassroots conservation operation.

I was excited to visit Shannon’s village. Her Peace Corps experience is completely different than mine. It was cool to see how different the Creole culture is compared the K’ekchi Maya culture. Beth and I got to see where Shannon lives and works, as well as seeing all the howler monkeys. I have never seen them up close, but I always here them very loudly at night in Laguna because the howler monkeys live in the Laguna mountain. So I am used to hearing them, but not seeing them. That will change today!

The sanctuary takes up approximately 20 sq miles; however, the black howlers have made such an amazing comeback in the area, and the monkeys now roam freely all around the surrounding area.

Shannon helps run the Baboon Sanctuary visitor center. The center is located in Bermuda Landing. The center has a good number of exhibits and displays on the black howler monkey, the history of the sanctuary, and other wildlife found in Belize. Beth and I enjoyed ourselves taking pictures with the monkeys!!!

I can’t believe that it has been 2 years that I have been in the country of Belize. I am having very mixed emotions about leaving Belize. It is bittersweet because I am excited to go back home to family and friends, but also sad to leave all my villagers and PCVs that I have become close to in the past two years.

Today my warden texted me that we are on alert for a hurricane and that we might need to head to Belmopan for consolidation. I packed my hurricane bucket with all useful items needed in case of emergency. Nate (my warden) finally confirmed around noon that we will all need to go to Belmopan because the hurricane is predicted to hit. I rode on the bus with Amy, Kevina and some fun newbies up to Belmopan. It is always great to catch up with new and old PCV friends!

The hurricane thank goodness didn’t hit Belize at all. Therefore, we were allowed to go back to our villages. I was sad though I still couldn’t make it to the wedding or trip to San Miguel that my Laguna villagers were planning.

Today some of the teachers went to school to start organizing their classrooms… I went for a little bit and then came home. I then tried to plan for Beth’s trip. My friend Beth (from Horsham!) is coming to visit me from August 24 to Sept 2. She is my last visitor and what I am planning to do with her is everything that I haven’t done yet here in Belize. I plan to take her to the Baboon Sanctuary, Altun Ha, Hopkins, Lubantun and San Miguel River and zip lining. Lastly we will attend a wedding in Laguna! I hope what I have planned works out… bc in Belize there is chance it does not. lol

Today I went to school again for our teachers orientation. I love going back to school and being busy with school work rather than all these Peace Corps Reports heheh. Today we met and discussed important issues that should be addressed right away. For example, last year we had a problem with all the teachers coming after the bell, which would ring at 9am. They were constantly late. So this year the principal is stressing the importance of being punctual. Another issue that was brought up was the Safety plan the school needs to put into effect… if there was a fire, hurricane, earth quake, mud slide etc.

Today was another productive day at school!

Today I taught a 2 hour workshop to the 4 teachers of Laguna. The two teachers at Laguna (last year) have heard of the MICO reading diagnostic assessment tests. However, the two new teachers have not heard of it. I informed them on the importance of it and also how to administer the tests. The workshop went super well… as prizes I gave out the Books I bought from the TFABB workshop and my famous erasable pens that I got the teachers addicted too!

Today I woke up to a text from my principal that we are having teacher orientation at Laguna Government School today at 8:30 am. I got up, did an insanity workout, and went to school to meet the two new teachers! They are very nice. They are young new teachers! I think I can mentor them a lot. The one is studying to get her Bachelors degree in Primary education and has taught for 2 years and the other one is still working on her associates in primary education. Then my principal/counterpart Mr. Garcia is back teaching standard V & VI. Ms. Rose is also back, but she will be teaching standard III & IV this year. Overall, I enjoyed the staff orientation today.

Today was a busy day for me. When I was coming back from the creek a few days ago the pastor of the Pentecostal invited me to go to church today and take photos. It was the first time he ever talked to me in English. I was very impressed (he is from a back village-Jalacte) and I thought he didn’t speak any English; however, I understood him very well. Therefore, today I woke up early to attend the church service. I took pictures of them blessing the pastor and renewing his values as pastor to continue preaching in the Pentecostal Church.

I had to leave church early because I asked to help at Ernesto’s (my kid neighbor) birthday party. I was in charge of the games for the kids that were invited. The party was so nice. They had chips and dip, chicken, rice and beans, and potato salad with party bag and games. Poor Ernesto was so sad that someone stole his two motorcycles toys out of his bag. I asked him the next day if he had a good birthday… he said “no because some thief my motorcycles!” I enjoyed myself though. We played piñata, pass the balloon, and pop the balloon racing contests!

I am enjoying my summer in the village. Having a bit more free time allows me to hang out and bond with the children a bit more than usual! This afternoon has been movie day with all the kids in the village. About 10 of us watched the movie “How to Train your Dragon.” It was a super cute movie. After the movie the kids requested to watch it again. LOL. I said no let’s play jenga, which was a big hit in my house as always. However, today the kids beat their record! They got up 33 levels!!!

It has been ungodly hot here in Belize. I wish my village had a big river, but it doesn’t. We only have little creeks (where we do laundry and dishes). However, since it has been rainy season the creeks filled up a little bit more than usual— probably right to my waste (and I am 5’4). The kids convinced me to go swimming in the creek. It was so much fun. I taught the kiddies how to do handstands in the water! I want to go back soon… so I want it to rain more heheh.

Today I attended Kevina’s wonderful preschool workshop on reading strategies, writing strategies, preschool planning and make-n-takes!

I also got to catch up with Erica which was wonderful as always. We talked about our future plans and I can’t believe we are going home so soon. (Her sooner than me though… she is finished her service in Sept and I finish mine in Oct.)

This week is teacher’s workshop for all of Belize’s teachers. Most of the secondary teachers from my village have to go to Belize City to get their training and workshops. This year Laguna Government School teachers also went to Belize City to receive training because we are a pilot school for the new science program. Since my teachers were in Belize City I was attending the workshops in PG and taking notes for them.

I did not get the chance to go to all the workshops as I did last year, but I did make it to quite a few.

Also, this week I am trying to work on my many Peace Corps reports such as the Volunteer Reporting Form we need to fill out. Since I am finishing my service soon I will also need to fill out a Description of Service; therefore, I began working on that too. Other things I want to accomplish are

1- Insanity Workouts

2- Updating Blog

3- PCPP Grant Report and Thank You’s

4- High school scholarship funds

5- Making sure the shipment of books/education resources arrives on time to Laguna Village

6- Research about Central America (my 1 month trip after my service)

7- Resume and future job applications

8- Visit villagers and make good byes to give to them

I have so much to do in so little time!!

GLOW CAMP 2011

GLOW camp was from Tuesday July 26 to Saturday July 30.
Girls from all over Belize are invited to this Camp… therefore, my southern Belize girls were able to meet some northern Belize girls, who probably would have never been able to meet and/or make friends with if they were not given this chance to go to the GLOW camp!

GLOW camp teaches the girls about self-esteem, self-expression, and self reliance. Some sessions included….

Today my GLOW girls are getting ready for GLOW camp tomorrow. Laguna GLOW girls are lucky because they can charter a vehicle out the village for a low price. Poite GLOW girls (Poite is a far back village and they have a bus that goes to town every M,W,F, Sat) are not so lucky to charter for a low price. Laguna doesn’t have a bus anymore but we are much closer to town to charter. Anyway the Poite GLOW girls stayed the night at my house so we could charter in the morning to the bus and then take the Express bus to San Ignacio to the Log Cab Inn for the 2011 GLOW camp!

"Alcalde”… an easy way to describe an alcalde is to call him/her the judge of the village. Our alcalde of Laguna Village was voted out of office today because he abused (cut his wife with a machete). I am sad to see the alcalde change but glad domestic violence is not being tolerated anymore in the village.

Today in Laguna Village there was a memorial service for Pedro Shol (one of the founders of Laguna Village… today is the anniversary of his death.) He passed away 20 years ago. He had such a large wonderful family. They all very much a part of the village whether it be through the church or village council. I love the Shol family. I will never forget them! They have been so amazingly kind to me over the past 2 years!

Today I was finally feeling better so I went to town to see Ms. Modesta (the head of the Preschool Department for Toledo District). She said that the government is still considering taking over the preschool this coming 2011/2012 school year. She sent me with more paper work to fill out and informed me that she needed to come inspect the preschool building (which is our community center).

I just hope the government does take over the preschool. It will make all my work here I have done sustainable!

I am so sad to be informed that the Coy family lost their baby at 7 months old. I will keep them in my prayers. The baby was born sick (he had a tube put into his body because he had something wrong with his spine. They told me that he had a hole in his back, but I am not certain what that means.) They took the baby to Belize City and he passed away on July 13. Then they brought him down on the bus to have the funeral/burial the next day. It all happened so quickly and I was not able to attend the funeral because I was still very sick (vomiting and loose stools.) I will just pray for that baby and the Coy family.

Today Peace Corps Volunteers and Staff had a meeting at Big Falls today (for my group) and I was unable to go because I was so sick (vomiting and loose stools). The worst ever… I couldn’t even make it to the latrine/outhouse. I had to resort to being sick in a bucket….

Frank was here in Belize for a short time, but his goal was to get a lot accomplished. I think he did well for the short time he had here. He got pictures and interviews he needed. I was grateful he also came to help my women’s group. He helped them create a website and helped the TEA guest house with brochures… which will hopefully help with tourism in Laguna!

TOLEDO ECOTOURISM ASSOCIATION

The TEA guesthouses are designed to give both tourists and villagers personal privacy while allowing a respectful cultural exchange. The location of the guesthouses vary in each village - some are in the center, while others are on the outskirts. Accommodations are simple and clean, built of local wood and covered with a traditional thatch roof. Eight bunkbeds with mattresses and mosquito netting, along with blankets and towels are provided. Primitive, private outdoor showers (usually a bucket and cup) and latrines are provided. Be prepared to rough it.

The objective of the T. E. A. is to share the benefits of tourism as widely as possible throughout each participating village. Guides, food providers, and entertainers are rotated among seven to nine families in each village.

The Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary are elected for each T.E.A. village every two years. In addition, members vote on a board which oversees the running of the program, ensuring guesthouses maintain certain standards and that tourism is distributed as fairly as possible among the villages.

Blessing of the new pastors house

Today Frank and I woke up very early to help the women cook and prepare for today’s church service- the blessing of the new pastor’s house. Frank got a lot of GREAT pictures this morning. The women cooked from 5am to 8am. Then frank and I went back to my house to have some breakfast and then we headed back to the ceremony. It was a long ceremony from 8:30am to 11:30am. The ceremony included singing, guitar playing and preaching and of course the blessing of the house. After the blessing of the house we all ate chicken Caldo and pooch. I was surprised Frank liked it. I didn’t like pooch when I first arrived…it didn’t have much flavor but, now it has grown on me, but Frank said he liked it. I think he would do well here as a PCV in Laguna!

After the ceremony Frank was able to take photos of the ladies washing the dishes in the creek (which is common here in Laguna)! I am lucky enough to have a pipe at my house so I don’t have to wash my dishes in the creek anymore; however, when I first arrived I did.

It was a surprise when I got back to Laguna that Frank was there. I wasn’t certain if he would go straight to Laguna or stay in Belize City or PG. He did go straight to Laguna and already got some work done. When I got back he had 2 interviews already arranged for the night (Ms. Rosa- the chairlady of the women’s group and Mr. Samuel Ack- the chairman of Laguna).

Today I woke up early so that I could go to breakfast with my Mom, Gram, Aunt Donna, Kelsey, Mike, and Andrew. I am realizing now I ate out at a lot of restaurants this trip home (but delicious food I can’t get in Belize… like yogurt and cottage cheese… thanks mom for having my favorite foods in the fridge when I arrived home!!!)

Andrew brought me to the airport. This time it wasn’t too sad because I know I will be finished my Peace Corps service in a few months (in Oct). Of course I will miss everybody still!

PS something I learned about my PC experience, which I realized several months into my Peace Corps Service, is that I do get homesick!

Today I had lunch at Piro’s Pizza. It was so nice seeing Johanna’s family! I can’t believe it has been 2 years since I last seen them. Mrs. Piro was tearing up when I walked into the shop. It was such a wonderful welcoming.

After lunch Susan and I went shopping. She helped me pick out my dress to wear for the party tonight at my Dads.

My dad did such a fabulous job on preparing for the party on one of his only days off. He went over and beyond!!! My favorite was his famous BBQ chicken! So YUMMMY! He also had grilled hot dogs, hamburgers, and more! Thank you dad! So great to see… Megan Laffey, Mike Campbell, Mike, Kelsey, Dan, Maura, Bob, Johanna, and Grace L!! and of course my dad and sue!

After the party on the deck we headed to Keenans!!! Such a fun night!

Today I finally got to go to Walmart and print some of my pictures and run some of my errands! Andrew was not thrilled with the idea of going to Walmart on the busy packed day of the 4^th of July! However, he was a fabulous boyfriend and did accompany me!

After running some errands Andrew took me to a lovely fancy dinner in Cape May! Then we watched fireworks on a double date with Johanna and Bob! Such a GREAT night!

Today I went to the beach in N. Wildwood! I miss the beach so much! Even though I live in the Caribbean I hardly get to the beach…. And I don’t have a good tan surprisingly. I kinda hide from the sun in Belize because it is too hot and intense. I usually walk around with an umbrella if it is a hot sunny day in Belize… something I would have never done in N. Wildwood on a sunny hot day.

It was great to be at the beach with Aunt Jackie, Uncle Chris, Ryan, Christian and Olivia… bonus Johanna and Bob came to the beach to see me too!

After the beach I met with Frank to discuss possible ideas he could do his project on in Belize (he is coming to visit me and document Belize!) Im super excited!

After dinner Andrew, his cousin and I went to mini golf! A classic thing to do in the summer!!! I got a few hole in ones!!! Wooohoooo!
