A Peace Corps volunteer from up north, Dena, taught other PCVs a workshop on grant writing 101.
There were four parts to the workshop:
I. How to prepare a proposal
II. How to find funders
III. Specific PC projects
IV. Life after Peace Corps
Other key points about the workshop:
- Simplify, Simplify, Simplify
- Less is more
- Find a 15 year old to read your final project- it must make sense to him/her.
- What’s the problem you want to address and is it based on community needs?
- What is your evidence that the community is behind this?
- Does this project come from the needs of your community? If not, don’t do it!!!
Proposal basics:
- Use the format of the grantor
- Always include a one page cover letter (contact name, phone and email, and amount requesting)
- Steal ideas not money.
She gave a great worksheet on how to find funders!
Create your own Kiva…
Life after PCV:
- Idealist.com
- Federal job list serv
- Foundation Center
- Peace Corps website
- Networking
- Create your own job!
Overall a very informative all day workshop! Thanks Dena!
