Mordi Miss Graduation!

June 4, 2011

Congratulations to Mordicayo Miss! He graduated from Toledo Community College High School today. He had such a nice party with rice and beans, chicken, pork caldo, pooch, coffee, juice, or cacao. This year there is only one high schooler graduating in the village that is a big difference than last year (last year I went to about 8 high school graduation parties!)

Picture Day

June 3, 2011

Today I took school photos all afternoon, which included individual student photos, class photos, and teacher photos like I did last year. I will print them out when I go home for my birthday and bring them back for the students and teachers. This year I added family photos. However, only one family showed up. I was disappointed with the lack of participation. Something that will only benefit them… having a free family photo.

Cuxtal Training Canceled for the day… Whole day at School!

Thursday June 2, 2011

Today I spent the day at the preschool and the primary school because the cuxtal training was canceled due to preparation for the upcoming graduation party!

Festival of Arts/ Dance Performance

Wednesday June 1, 2011

Today was the Festival of Arts. This year it was not done as well. Last year it was much bigger success. For example, this year Toledo district was told too late; therefore, they did not have the stage performance competition. This year each school could send in one performance just for entertainment during the judging of the arts and crafts. The GLOW girls did their dance… I was proud of them. We got lots of compliments that it was a beautiful dance!

GLOW girls dress rehearsal

Tuesday May 31, 2011

Today I went to Cuxtal training in the morning, and then went to school in the afternoon. Mr. Garicia my principal wanted me to do the register (tally the attendance for the end of the month) and to also have the GLOW girls practice their dance in front of the whole school. The girls did well. I just wish they would smile when they dance!!!

GLOW applications due!

Monday May 30, 2011

Today the GLOW girls applications were due. The girls have to apply to go to camp. What the application entails is two essays and one recommendation letter. This year I only have 4 girls that have not been to camp… so I am hoping all 4 girls can go.

GLOW Girls Fundraising some more…

Friday May 27, 2011

Today is the last Friday of the month; therefore, it is Teacher’s pay day and we have off from school. Today my GLOW girls are going to bake doughnuts and sell house to house in Laguna Village. My girls have already raised the $400.00 dollars needed to send four girls to GLOW camp in July. Now we are raising money to go on a field trip. The girls and I decided that we wanted to take a trip to Labuntun Maya ruins, have a picnic and swim in the San Miguel River! It took about 3 hours to bake and 3 hours to go house to house. So it was a long day; however, we reached our goal. We now have $100.00 raised to take our trip! GO GLOW GIRLS!

Preschool/Cuxtal Training/GLOW Club Meeting

Thursday May 26, 2011

Just like Tuesday I woke up and went for a run, took a cold shower and went to preschool. Then after lunch I went to the women’s cuxal training. I am so glad that the women are still so motivated about getting trained on how to make quality cuxtals. After the cuxtal training I had a GLOW meeting where Alicia and I taught the GLOW girls a dance for festival of arts (to the Celine Dion song I’m Alive).

Football in San Marcus

Wednesday May 25, 2011

Today I didn’t go with the primary school to their football game in San Marcus Village because that would mean that I would have to miss another day of preschool. I love going to preschool it is always the highlight of my day.

I was told that I didn’t miss much at the football game because both our boys and girls team lost and it was hot and sunny with no shade. So I’m glad I spent the day with my preschoolers!

Teaching Preschool/ Cuxtal training

Tuesday May 24, 2011

Recently I have been canceling preschool on Tuesdays and Thursdays because I have been attending the women’s cuxtal training (and learning how to make cuxtals… today I started my 2nd cuxtal). However, since there has been so many holidays (days off from school) I decided to have preschool this Tuesday and Thursday and then just go to cuxtal training in the afternoon. So that’s what I did!

Commonwealth Day

Monday May 23, 2011

Today is Commonwealth day in Belize. I was told Belize celebrates Commonwealth day because it is the Queen’s birthday. It is a national holiday in Belize. We even had off from school. So today I spent the day visiting villagers and then sending my resume to Mrs. Husenica who is willing to help me find a teaching job when I get home. Also, I sent it to my Uncle Bill who said he could help me find a job at the state department. Wish me luck!
