We raised 267 dollars!!!! YAY we might be able to get internet soon!

We sold tamales, garnoches, chips and dip, ideals, popcorn, and cake.

We had games… punchboard. (Since I did not eat… I did not get sick at the fundraiser!)

Monday December 14, 2009

I am still sick. I run home from school because I can’t hold any food down.

Tuesday December 15, 2009

K’ekchi and no Karate because of my parasite issue.

Still sick  I called my nurse to ask her what is wrong with me. She said if it lasted fewer days it would have been food poisoning. However, since it lasted this long… it is an intestinal parasite in my TUMMY! AHHH… I have a worm in my stomach. I just keep getting more and more hard core… and living life in the jungle of Belize lol!

Friday December 4, 2009

I picked up 2 packages from town today! Wooohooo thanks DAD and thanks Aunt Donna and Uncle Frank!

Saturday December 5, 2009

Today I went to my first engagement party in Belize! It is so different than US. They are both 17 years old. They courted for a few months and then he asked the parents if they could get married. She had no ring until the engagement party and there they sit in a big circle (parents, grandparents and discuss finances of when it is possible for them to get married). They chose the first weekend in April. I am so sad because Dena will be leaving Laguna and moving to Stann Creek with her new husband. I got to bond with her in Laguna and now she is leaving kinda soon.

Sunday December 6, 2009

Today I was supposed to have Spanish tutoring. However, I was sooo tired from my long week… that I just rested and watched New Moon… my favorite movie of the month! Thanks Erica for letting me borrow it!

Monday December 7, 2009

Today was another busy day at school. Greg a PCV was so kind to come and help me with IT things in our computer lab! Everyone is sooo nice to me! Thanks GREG!

Today I also taught writer workshops lessons and computer lessons.

Tues December 8, 2009 (The horrible BUM story)

Today I made my K’ekchi lesson. However, missed my karate lesson!

I did make it in to town to get internet. (My favorite). I have a horrible story about this bum… So on Garrifina Settlement day back Nov. 19, Katie (a PCV) told me that this man works so hard and is really hungry so give him 2 dollars. So since I did feel bad I did.

Then he approached me again with his cigarette and asked for 10 dollars another day. I said all I had for him was a dollar. Then he left. He continues to come up to me. I have to say no.

So the first time I said no… he gave me this whole big speech aren’t I Christian…. Blah blah blah. Then I walked away… he cursed every name in the book at me.

Then I saw him when I was getting food and I had a smile on my face (as usual and he said don’t you laugh at me you f…. b…..Uh I gave him 4 dollars total and he was never grateful and now he just curses at me. What a lousy man.

Wed. December 9, 2009

Today we had an internet fundraising meeting. It went well 

Thursday December 10, 2009

I sub-taught all day because my principal was sick.

My BIG Host Family Confrontation (another growing experience)

Saturday November 28, 2009

Back to Laguna! I confronted my host day about the situation he was putting me in. He thinks I am rich and he wants and asks for too much. So I talked to him about that and now we are much better.

I'll have more details later... or email to get the detailed story... if interested!

A sick sick Thanksgiving...

Saturday November 21, 2009

I picked up my school uniform from Ms. Mendez the seamstress in PG. I wear the uniforms of the teachers now. I got lots of compliments on it! (And I didn’t even get that ripped off. I thought they were charging me 20 dollars per shirt and 20 dollars per skirt. However, it is 20 dollars per set (skirt and shirt) Thank goodness.

Sunday November 22, 2009

Today I packed to travel to Belmopan. I woke up feeling very terrible.

However, I still went to Ms. Gloria’s mother birthday party. Her mom is the same age as my mom!

Monday November 23, 2009

I traveled on the bus (6 hour ride) to Belmopan. I always seem to travel with ED and Emma the P.C. couple staying in Santa Ana Village.

Tuesday November 24, 2009

I went to training (however, I had to leave early because I was soooo sick!)

November 2009

Monday November 2, 2009

This morning I woke up very early to send out a letter to the parents of Laguna. The letter described my goals, ideas, and me.

I then gave a speech at the public meeting at the community center. It went very well. Numerous villagers approached me about how excited they are that I am here and that I am trying to successfully get internet back into Laguna. The only issue is that there are only 300 people in my village and fundraising is an issue. The village has to fundraise for everything, and in order for the town to get internet it costs 577.50 a month (in Belize money 2:1).

After the meeting I heard about all the drama in Laguna; for such a little village it has lots of gossip and controversy.

Tuesday November 3, 2009

I subbed all day. I have been subbing a lot! The P.C. does not really want me to do that. However, I have been enjoying it very much!

Wednesday November 3, 2009

I didn’t go to school today because I had a Safety and Security meeting in Punta Gorda with the Peace Corps. The meeting was about getting to know your police. After that I was on the internet for a couple hours… but, hardly got any pics uploaded 

I got my BIKE!!! I am so excited. I am going to be so fit since my only transportation is walking and biking. I got a great deal… including the bike, bike stand, basket, and lock. The only complaint I have is that is painted black… and I wish it was pink.

Thursday November 5, 2009

Today I had a meeting with Daniel Mendez, safety and security staff, about my teacher house being fixed. I am so pumped to move in. It has three bedrooms, a kitchen, living room, shower, latrine, and 2 verandahs.

Daniel talked about how I should not have to pay rent since it is the ministry of education house. I am so excited… bc the chairman was making me pay rent, but the principal and the pc agreed that I should not have to pay.

I just know that the first thing that I need is to find a termite exterminator, electrician, plumber, and construction worker. I also need estimates and then the Peace Corps will have to accepts or deny it. I want to start right away because it seems as if things run very slow in Belize. I am learning patience. I love for things to get done right away…

Friday November 6, 2009

Today I gave the students (std III & IV) four tests today. I feel that they are really prepared to do well!

Saturday November 7, 2009

I am finally getting my digicell cell phone today! I now can have cell phone service in Laguna. GUESS WHAT it was canceled because of the hurricane  I was very disappointed. Another week without internet or cell service.

Today I am going shopping for many things today in Punta Gorda. (bank, police, karate, etc… so many places to go!)

I hope I don’t spend too much money. I have been spending a lot since all the Laguna villagers come around and sell me there jewelry, kushtals (purses), hair ties, baskets, artwork etc. Also, they have been charging me more than they would the local people in town. I am getting ripped off… I now know what it feels like to be a minority and a bit discriminated.

Sunday November 8, 2009

I waited and waited all day for the electrician to come today. He never showed. I was very disappointed because I need to get my estimates complete so that I can move into my own house.

While waiting I got to perfect and write some of my writer workshops lesson plans. So that was at least positive.

Also, I forgot to mention that there is no catholic church in Laguna. There is only k’ekchi prayer of worship or k’ekchi Pentecostal. So I attend those masses on Sundays… I like them because we sing and read a lot in K’ekchi.

Monday November 9, 2009

Today we had a really long productive teachers meeting discussing needs of the school.

Tuesday November 10, 2009

Today I went to my first KARATE class!!! I love it! Our instructor is a really cute and fit Belizean, 26 years old, and a doctor!!! Hahaha

I learned how to punch! There is a correct technique to punching. (I thought I already knew how to punch from my TAE BO experience).

Wednesday November 11, 2009

Today was the birthday of many of my friends… I didn’t get to wish them happy bday… bc I didn’t have internet or cell phone. Anyway, happy birthday Johanna, Carmine, and Theresa!!

Also today I had a Teacher Training Workshop in Punta Gorda, the district town. I learned more about special education and differentiation. (It was really a review of what I learning at Mount St. Mary’s University. ) I was happy to know that I am still up-to-date with all the teaching methodologies because the trainers for this workshop were from Missouri University.

Thursday November 12, 2009

This Thursday we had a parent meeting about the spray paint the children are putting on the walls. (I am debating to getting my masters in teaching administration (principal or vice)) However, after this meeting I am thinking a principals job might be more stressful than a teachers. The parents took out everything on the principal… they were screaming and annoyed at the principal for blaming their children. The parents think it is the teacher to blame. UHHHH… stressful.

Another KARATE class today! We learned how to block a face and stomach punch! Lots more to come…

Friday November 13, 20009

I had another teacher workshop on Reading strategies. I learned some new strategies that I can’t wait to use in the classroom! WOOOOHOOO! I love teaching!

Saturday November 14, 2009

ANOTHER WORKSHOP today! It was at big falls internet café.

I woke up again at 5 am to catch the bus. Every day I go into town I get up at 5am to catch the bus. So early for me, I am early to rise and early to bed.

Anyway, I stopped at the junction and got on the wrong bus. It was going to take me to Jalacte (the border crossing to Guatemala). It was not taking me to Big Falls, which was the place I was supposed to be. This nice lady who lives in both Laguna and Big Falls told me to get off at her house and catch the James bus that passes at 8:30 (so I had 2 hours to kill at her house). She made me breakfast and coffee. She was super kind and told me she would tutor me in Spanish for free!!! YAYYYY Cecy I will be able to converse to you in SPANISH!!!... soon!

Also while I was there I played with her precious 3 year old daughter, her son, and her teenage daughter. Her teenage daughter helped me make it to my workshop… otherwise I would be in Guatemala right now. Hahaha

Sunday November 15, 2009

Today I am going to Indian Creek for a Prayer of Worship K’ekchi retreat.

Also, I am going to lead and hold my first community and PTA internet meeting! Wish me luck please. That is my biggest goal so far (to get INTERNET in my Village!)

Monday November 16, 2009

Today I taught my Writer’s Workshop lessons to Std 5 and 6! I planned to go around from house to house to visit my fellow villagers in Laguna. I feel that I don’t know everyone yet and there is only 300 people… I should definitely know everyone! (I’m best at the with the students… bc there are only 74 of them at Laguna Government School.

Tuesday November 17, 2009

The Hill Side Health doctors and nurses came to teach health classes today. (Thank goodness it was no hand washing because the people of Laguna don’t regularly wash their hands!

By the sinks at the school there is no soap. I plan to have my host brother build me a locker to put soap in there for the kids… bc it is important to wash your hands after and before meals and also after using the bathroom!

Also, I had my third Karate Class!

Wednesday November 18, 2009

Another Writer’s Workshop tutoring lesson!

Placencia (first mini vacation)

Oct 30, 2009

I am going to Placencia for the night. Today I traveled at 6 am to go to Placencia. I met Lilly and Taylor on the streets of Punta Gorda. There were many volunteers who went. I swam in the beautiful water and stayed on the beach all day. I have never swum in such warm nice water.

So many locals came up to me to sell me things… I get annoyed because they don’t realize that I am not a tourist. Placencia is very nice, but expensive.

Oct 31, 20009 (Halloween)

Back to Punta Gorda. I attended the BBQ for the House of Prayer/worship. They had a fundraiser to get instruments for the band. They charged five dollars a ticket. There is a lot of fund raising that needs to be done in Laguna.

(Kids don’t trick-or-treat in my village)

Halloween in Laguna

Oct 29, 2009

So I was informed that Laguna Village School had a Halloween School Party, Costume contest, haunted house (they call it spooky house), and a dance later this week. We did not prepare much for it. Yet, I thought everything was going to be handled well.

Little did I know that on Thursday, the morning that we were supposed to have all these Halloween festivities, the principal called me at 8am to inform me that he would not be in today? He had a meeting in Punta Gorda.

My principal, Mr. Garcia, told me to put together the activities with little notice or information. I was a nervous wreck. I knew there was sooooo much to be done in sooooo little time.

I had the standard 5 and 6 (grade 5-8) helped me create the spooky house from scratch. (We hung my sheets to make a path. With their machetes the boys cut the big bay leave braches. We covered the community center with them so it would be dark and spooky.

Standard 3 and 4 drew, cut, and colored scary decorations to hang. I asked children to bring any scary items that they had in their home. They had none. Yet, a little girl let me borrow her hammock… so we used that as a spider web to trap people in the spooky house.

I helped the kids act. I told them to jump out of the curtains and make scary noises (scream and yell). They were good at that lol.

Also, I was soooo happy that my dad sent me Halloween decorations in the mail. Those two items were the main attraction of the haunted house. It was a bat that made a spooky noise and a skeleton whose eyes blinked red. The kids were amazed and just those two silly decorations.

We only made 12.00 dollars (we charged the kids a shilling (25 cents) to enter. (Some kids did not want to enter because they were scared.)

There was a controversy with the costume contest because Mr. Garcia said that the children can buy there masks from Punta Gorda… but, that did not help them win the points. They were annoyed that the lost the contest after spending money. The two teachers and I judged on creativity, originality, scariest, and overall appearance. The winners where all homemade costumes (some of the costumes were very creative for limited money and resources.)

Life as an Official PCV!

The week back in Belmopan for our big day of SWEARING IN AS AN OFFICIAL VOLUNTEER!

October 18-23 (Belmopan)

Oct 18-20 Last days of our training…. sessions

Oct 21 CBT presentations, cross sector presentations, and talent show (talent show didn’t go that great for me… I had too many pictures to present. It is hard for me to cut out any pictures since I love them all!)

Oct 22 (9-1 pm) SWEARING IN! We became official Peace Corps Volunteers (I was first to receive my certificate… the ambassador shook my hand… messing up the whole order…I was a bit embarrassed.) I got to see my Maya Mopan family again! I was very happy.

(3-4) 1st year vs. 2nd year volunteers football game. I did well. I blocked a shot with my stomach (it stung very badly). However, we lost.

(6-10) The Ambassador House Party! It was beautiful and awesome.

(11-4am) After party… limbo, booty contest (I placed second), and lots of shots! Hehehhe

Things I forgot to mention:

The awards I won on swearing in… Most likely to adopt a pikni (the word child in Creole) in Belize and best photographer (one, two, and three). Also there was a limbo contest, which I lost. However, I did really well in the buns of steel contest (I placed 2nd only because did not dance). I found that contest torturous; but, somehow I did well.
