Happy Teachers Day!

Friday May 13, 2011

Today was Teachers Appreciation Day. My teachers went to Guatemala the illegal way. Therefore, I did not go, but spent my whole day uploading pictures from my trips and updating my blog! Also I was invited to help bake this morning at the Shol’s house because twenty-six men went to their farm to plant corn. Overall, I had a really productive day.

Making my first cuxtal!

Tuesday May 10, 2011

The trainees were supposed to leave on the school bus, but they preferred to charter a ride to dump to catch the 6am express back to Belmopan. I enjoyed their stay. I like having visitors in Laguna.

Today Petrona came back to train the Laguna Women’s group again for the second time! Again the training is on quality cuxtals and new designs. Today I started my 1st cuxtal!!!

Mothers day/Trainees visit

Sunday May 8, 2011

Today again the Coc family made breakfast (egg/mulb, tomato/pishb and flour tortilla/arin… English/kekchi word)

Then we went on the usual hike (up Laguna Mountain and cave). However, we only made it to cave- both trainees have weak ankles so they didn’t go inside. No lagoon today because the boardwalk is still too rough and broken up.

After the hike we visited the Shols and we ended up discussing about the skill of thatching.

After that I went home to call my mom and my fam and friends who are mothers; while the trainees enjoyed Hammock time. It is good that I have two hammocks in my house. For dinner Marla made spaghetti. Then Barbra and I went to the House of Prayer Church for a bit and then to bed early we went.

PC trainees come to Laguna!

Saturday May 7, 2011

Marla and Barbra (took the express bus down Friday night) I went into town Saturday morning to get them. We took the 10:00am James bus back to Laguna because I wanted them to help bake because the Cucul family were planting. We were still a little late because the charter wouldn’t start (car wouldn’t start). Finally it did and we made it back to visit the Cuculs just in time to have lunch there. After that we rested because I know how draining training can be.

After we rested we took a little tour of Laguna. Then we had dinner with my neighbors (They made stew chicken and the PC trainees got to help bake because didn’t get a chance earlier). Then we hung out with Coc family and chatted until bed time.

I am allergic to mangos

Friday May 6, 2011

Today I went to Belmopan to see Dr. Craig about my spreading rashes. Dr. Craig and Nurse Jackie think I am allergic to the mango tree and skin (that produces milk). Poison ivy doesn’t exist here in Belize. Being allergic to mango skin is common for us PCVs to catch the rash. A few other volunteers have the same exact thing I have. Mine is pretty bad they think it must have rubbed on my back pack or clothing because it keeps spreading (arms and behind my leg). They put me on 5 oral steroids and a strong cream to cure it.

PS I can still eat the fruit if it is already peeled. I just can't touch the skin!

1st day of quality cuxtal training

Thursday May 5, 2011

Today was a GREAT day I woke up super early because I am excited for the ladies to get their cuxtal training (and use the PCPP grant). I got up made breakfast, cleaned my house and jog to the junction (6 miles).

Today was the 1st Cuxtal training with Petrona from Santa Ana. She is a pro weaver. I am pleased to have her working with the Laguna Women’s Group. Today was a success. Nineteen women showed up all motivated to learn. Today they learned a new pattern and got to work right away.

No Bus System, but celebrating our School System....

Wednesday May 4, 2011

Today I taught preschool. I did miss my preschoolers!

So yesterday I found out that the Shols (owner of the bus company in Laguna) sold their bus. Now there is no bus system in Laguna. We are stranded. It is tough to go to town now. We need to bike or walk the 3 miles and then catch a bus to town. It will be difficult getting my fruits and vegetables, as well as any heavy groceries. It will be impossible for me to get my 5 gallon water jug filled. I am extremely upset that we have no bus. The Shols reason for stopping was good though: fuel has gone up 4 dollars in the last 2 months and we have such a small village they were actually losing money than gaining.

So today I had to go to town to get money from the bank because tomorrow I will need to pay the cuxtal trainer. Therefore, I biked in the absolute pouring rain to get to the junction. I was soaked everywhere. It was not fun. Reality has sunken in. I am no longer on vacation.

Once I made it back from town there was a ceremony for Mr. Jean Propher. He is one of the founders of Laguna Government School; he even helped build it in 1976. It was an honor to meet him.
