3rd time to Laguna Cave and Mountain

Sunday January 9, 2011

Today I took the GLOW girls on a hike to the mountain and cave, with the help of Bernadina and Adelina (my new neighbors!)

I was very pleased that everything went smoothly, no one got hurt, and we got to see everything! There are many villagers who have never seen the cave or made it to the top of the mountains. However, I wanted to give my GLOW girls the opportunity to do that. I am really proud of them.

(No pictures bc my camera died :(

Moving in to my Thatch!

Saturday January 8, 2011

Today, I moved from the teacher’s house, which made me constantly sick, (because of the mold, dust, rat and bat poop) to Ms. Theresa’s vacant thatch house. This house is so nice. The Coc family only uses it for storage. Therefore, they moved their things out and fixed it up for me. They made shelves, covered tables, put in my shower and sinks. They did an amazing job for me!!!

Also, Kristen a PCV from PG helped me move into my house. She was such a HUGE help. I was so grateful to have her there. I hope she comes back soon all the villagers loved her.

Holiday is over...

January 6, 2011

Thursday January 6 I went back to school. I was motivated and ready to start the year off right. I sat down with my principal and discussed future ideas, projects, and workshops I will be working on.

Also, my GLOW girls group has been extremely active having meetings about 3 to 4 times a week!

Butterfly Farm and then Good bye to Andrew :(

January 5, 2011

Butterfly Farm (Mountain Pine Ridge)

I was soooooooo sad to say goodbye to Andrew. I didn’t want him to go. I had so much fun with him. It was a perfect 10 days!!! All I can say is that I balled my eyes out when we got to the airport. Then I went straight back to Laguna to get ready to move into my new thatch house.

Mountain Pine Ridge

January 3 and 4, 2011
For the last 2 days that Andrew was here we spent it in Mountain Pine Ridge at Pine Ridge lodge.
I loved the place we stayed, Pine Ridge Lodge. It was perfect… besides no place to charge my camera!!!ahahah It had no electricity, but we got used to the kerosene lamps. We made huge mess with them… soot was everywhere! However, we finally figured it out!  It was cool though eating by candle light and the meals were delicious. They made what we wanted.
It was very homey. We really bonded with the owners. They chatted with us and gave advice where are the best spots to go.

Pine Ridge Lodge is the most rustic. It has screened porches and a hammock room; a perfect place for relaxation. It has a creek that runs across the bottom of the grassy gardens, which have many orchids (black orchid national flower).
We went to Big Rock falls, which was Beautiful!! We were advised to go there instead of the 1,000 foot falls from the owners of the lodge. I was glad we listened to them!

New Years Day/ Two Year Anniversary

Saturday January 1, 2011

On New Year’s Day Andrew and I just relaxed around the resort (hammocks, pool, beach and bar).

That night we went back to the place we went the night before, but upstairs for a romantic dinner of sushi! It is impossible to find sushi anywhere, but San Pedro.

New Years Eve!

December 31, 2010
We went to San Pedro for our two year anniversary!!! I enjoyed myself with Andrew so much! The water taxi was long, but so fun because I was with Andrew. We talked and talked!

We stayed at the Royal Caribbean, which was very nice! Andrew was not a hundred percent pleased. But, I was more than pleased it had a pool an amazing Caribbean Sea view and everything!

There was so much to do there in San Pedro. I couldn’t believe how big it was. We decided just to relax because we were on adventures since he arrived in Belize.

However, I definitely want to go back to finish my scuba certification and maybe do… diving, snorkeling, manatee-watching, swimming, fishing, sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, parasailing, biking, spas, and yoga… if only I had the money and vacation days lol!

For New Years Eve we went to an awesome restaurant where we made new friends and ran into many Peace Corp Volunteers! The restaurant was called Fido’s, which they say all American’s mispronounce. The food was great… but, super expensive. Thank goodness that Andrew was paying! Hehehe. The place was packed; however, even without reservations we got a seat. Our waiter knew some of my Laguna villagers, which is awesome. Many of my villagers sell their crafts out in San Pedro because it really a tourist site.

There was live music, dance floor, confetti and balloons that dropped at midnight. We definitely rang in the New Year with a bang!!!!

Caracol Maya Ruins

Thursday December 30, 2010

Andrew and I drove to San Ignacio because we had to be at Pacz Tours early to go see Caracol. I have been dying to see this ruin because it is the biggest one in Belize!!!

Belize lonely planet book says Caracol was once the most powerful cities in the entire Maya world. It is now enshrouded by thick jungle near the Guatemalan border, 52 mile 2 hour drive from San Ignacio. Caracol sits on the Vaca Plateau at 1650ft above sea level and stretching over 70 sq. miles at its peak in AD 650.

At its height, the city’s population may have approached 150,000, more than twice as many people as Belize City has today. Though they had no natural water source, the people of Caracol dug artificial reservoirs to catch rain water. Caracol central area was a bustling place of temples, palaces, busy craft workshops and markets.

Touring the site was wonderful. Our tour guide was so educated and passionate about Caracol. We got to see Plaza A and B, which are still the tallest building in Belize!!! We got to see palace compounds and temples and see the importance of the number three. In addition we saw tombs, residential areas with palaces, shrines, throwns, and a ball court. At the end of the tour we saw some replica and some original stellas.

Caracol was so amazing to see all that was there. All the time I learn more and more about the Maya culture. I had so much fun climbing the ruins with Andrew.
