Sunday January 30, 2011
Sunday, there was a village meeting, as well as a PTA meeting. Village meetings seem to drag for me because it is in all K’kechi!!! I need to keep working on my K’ekchi… I know many many phrases, but not even close to being fluent.
The village meeting lasted forever. The topics that were discussed at the meeting were:
- Prayer
- Swearing in of Alcalde
- Fajina discussion
- Health
o garbage disposal (all families will need a designated area to burn their garbage).
o latrine (8 families still do not have latrine toilet… they just go the bathroom anywhere- the village council is making them build a latrine).
o Opening hours of health post
o Pigs on the loose (we have pigs wonder Laguna village. They leave their waste everywhere and get into all the garbage… they make the village dirty. The village council is trying to figure out a way to have the pigs penned. However, half the village has pigs and the other half doesn’t; therefore, they haven’t been able to come to a conclusion about penning pigs or not. I think the pigs should she penned it would make the village much more sanitary.)
o An ambulance will now be available in Laguna in needed, just need to contact health worker.
- Cutting Lumber (there will be a fine to those that cut lumber without a permit).
- Village Council Financial Report discussed
- Other matter (this is where I spoke of upcoming projects I have!)
SOME OF MY PROJECTS:
1. Establishing and continuing the Chabil Chahim Preschool I began in September 1, 2010.
2. Establishing a library (want to get books donated)
3. Reading Groups (I have daily in the afternoons with students that are two grade levels below. The focus is on phonics, fluency and comprehension).
4. BTL ( getting the free school internet provided by BTL. And possibly fill out the grant for sports items!)
5. GLOW Club (fundraise, dance, cheerleading, football, arts etc. Work on the girls self-expression, self-esteem, and self-reliance.)
6. Women’s group grant training

Thatching Today
Thursday January 27, 2011
My old neighbors the Shol’s invited me to bake tortilla while the men thatch their kitchen thatch house. They took down the old thatch and re-thatched today!

GLOW Fundraiser
January 22, 2011
My GLOW girl sold doughnuts in PG! My GLOW girls need to raise 400.00 dollars for 4 girls to be able to attend GLOW Camp in July.
Big thanks to Ms. Maria for teaching us how to make the doughnuts! When we got to town I did most of the selling by yelling and marketing of the doughnuts. The girls are rather shy. I pushed them to sell the doughnuts, but in the end we went store to store where I did all the selling. I need to think of some ideas how to get these girls out of their shell! Any thoughts?!?!?

Festival of Arts Workshop 2011
January 18, 2011
Today was the festival of Arts Workshop. This is the second year I have attended this workshop. Last year it was held at the Sports Complex (a huge building with cement walls, but thatch roof). This year it was still in town, but at a resort though. The resort is new and is called the Garden of Eden Resort.
At the workshop we learned the basics of expressive arts (dance, song, and drama).
The beginning of the workshop the dance instructor warmed us up with dance moves and stretches. Then she talked with us about the importance of having a dance age appropriate for primary school students (in past years the students like to go on stage and do punta (a racy dance) with suggestive songs playing in the background. )Ms. Dawn the dance instructor made sure that all contestants with suggestive moves and song will be disqualified immediately.
The second part of the workshop was supposed to be about the singing part of the competition. However, we skipped the song part because the instructor couldn’t make it down to PG. Yet, the singing instructor still gave a handout to review. The worksheet had music basics on it. For example, allegro con brio=fast with spirit, largo=very slowly, lento=slowly, moderato=moderately, anclante= walking speed, allegro=fast, presto=very fast, and allegretto=light and lively.
Also included in the music basic handout:
Term Symbol Affect
Forte F Loud
Piano P Soft
Mezzo forte Mp Slightly soft
Mezzo forte MF Slightly loud
Sforzando SFZ Instantly loud
Fortepiano Fp Loud then soft
Crescendo < Gradually louder
Diminuendo > Gradually softer
After lunch we worked on writing skits.
We also again just reviewed a worksheet:
• A skit is a short play (most often without many changes of acts or settings).
• Best if skits are based on a major theme.
• Festival skits should be about 5 minutes long.
• Should be age appropriate dealing with themes which are appropriate to the level and maturity of children. No obscene language.
• Do not overcrowd the stage with props.
Format of the skit
Name:
Theme:
Playwrights/Dramatist/Writers:
Overview or Synopsis or Summary of the Piece: (This should be done in short paragraph format and should provide insight into the theme and story of the skit without telling the entire story.)
Cast of Characters:
Names of Characters/ Brief Descriptions/ Roles they play:
Plot/ Story line:
Introduction
Development
Climax
Conclusion
The story line or plot is achieved through the actions and interactions of the characters as the move and converse through the different scenes and acts which all serve to illustrate or bring out the them (main idea) of the piece.
Act One: Scene One
Scene Two
Ace Two: Scene One
Scene Two
Scene Three
This workshop is a two day workshop tomorrow we will finish what we started!
Festival of Arts part II
The instructors of the workshop did not arrive today. Therefore, the teachers voted for me to teach the dance section because I had the most flexible kicks lol!
After the dance section we had the drama part… where my group scored the highest on our skit… yay (I was the narrator)! Mount St. Mary’s expressive arts studying have paid off!
PS Also this week my GLOW girls did yoga!!! Feeling so happy healthy and artsy!

Productive Week in Laguna Village
The week of January 10-16, 2011
This week I had a very productive week. I have been working out hard core, organizing, planning and achieving a lot. I had preschool, reading group lessons, and GLOW meetings. At the end of the week I had a Reading Strategies workshop for my Laguna Government School teachers.
