Field Trip to Pine Hill

November 18, 2010
Laguna Government School went to Pine Hill, which is a Mennonite village. (Theresa was very surprised to see a large population of Mennonites/Amish in Belize.)

The Mennonites here live without any electricity. They live very simply. They write letters for communication.

We went to their village because they are excellent famers. They taught us a little about farming. They also make their own cheese and dairy there. We had some of their delicious wheat rolls and cookies. We were sad that the watermelons weren’t ready to be reaped because that is what they are known for… big cheap delicious watermelons!

The area was beautiful. It was second time I saw a pine tree in Belize…

The only con of the field trip was that I wasn’t allowed to take pictures…

Julian Cho High School Cultural Day!!

Nov. 17, 2010

I went to Julian cho High School Cultural day. It was GREAT. They had each food, music, dance, clothing, etc of each culture in Belize.

Today Daniel my safety and security officer came to my village to inform me that the PC nurse said I have to move out of my house because I keep getting sick. Therefore, I am now on the hunt for vacant houses in Laguna.

Austin's In Site Visit

Tuesday November 9, 2010

My boss Austin came in to check on me for my in site visit. It went well. The only bad thing was that I had to rush back from Placencia to my village!

Placencia

Monday November 8, 2010
I took Theresa to Placencia because she has been in Belize for almost a week and hasn’t seen a beautiful Caribbean waters yet.

We got to Placencia, which I was so excited about. However, it was a cloudy day (however, we both got some color… me more redness…)

We got to talk and relax on the beach which was very nice. I was surprised the sea was not blue blue like the first time I went to Placencia last year. They said maybe because of the coolness. It was really cold the week Theresa was here… there was a cold front… I wore two hoodies and two pairs of sweat pants, as well as 4 blankets at night.

Preschool Trip

November 5 and 6, 2010
Corzal
I made Theresa come on the preschool trip with me. There were about 20 some preschool teachers and me, Amy (a PCV), and Theresa. The trip was crazy, but I still had a great time.

Chetamal
We went all the way up north to see about 15 preschools, which is why we left PG at 3 am. Afterwards, we went Chetamala (those that had passports… there are many Belizeans who do not have passports). We went walking around looking for the mall… and not one of us spoke Spanish. It was quite ridiculous. After a couple hours we finally got in a taxi and made it to the mall. It was great… the only thing I got there was a delicious cup of frozen yogurt!

After that it was difficult to meet up with everyone bc we did not decide on a time and place to meet up. Therefore, the trip was pretty disorganized. Theresa couldn’t believe it and Amy and I were not surprised lol. You gain patience living here in Belize.

Once we got back to Chetamal there was not enough space in the hotel. We had to go find another hotel to stay. However, luckily we found Matt walking down the street and begged him to stay at his house… we were rather rude… but, he graciously took all 3 of us in. He even gave up his bed for us!

Free Zone
The next morning we went to Free Zone, which sells everything for cheap!!!

It confuses me though because free zone is on Belizean ground; however, Belizeans can’t go there without special permission. (Which we forgot to bring the letter…. Ahhh so disorganized… however, we got in).

Free Zone allows business entrepreneurs incredible Tax Free business opportunities.

Merchandize warehoused in a CFZ may be sold wholesale or retail:

• To diplomats of other countries

• To ships that dock at ports in Belize

• For direct export whether by sea, air or land

• Entry into national customs territory

The CFZ sits at the South Eastern border with Mexico. Currently, businesses in the zone are manufacturing, importing, exporting, distributing fuel, retailing and offering various services to Mexicans and international clients.

I bought tons of cheap preschool items, while Theresa and Amy bought cute clothes!
